Last Light, 36″ x 24″ x 1.5″, acrylic on canvas

On the Washington coast of the US, we often have dark and cloudy winters. The beauty of the sunset on some of these days comes just at the last few minutes, when the sun sinks below the clouds as it sets. The darkness of the sky creates a gorgeous contrast to the brilliance of the last light of the day.

I began by toning the gessoed, stretched canvas with orange. The next impulse I followed was to add the gray horizontal mark
I drew some straight horizontal lines across the entire width of the canvas. Next, I added some dark cloud forms. Finally, I used a dark, gray blue to begin creating the horizon.
Here I was adding details to the clouds and beginning to create the mountain forms.
Here you see a close up image of the details that I added to define the clouds, the gold and orange light and the land and mountains.
